What is the Montessori Method?

Montessori education recognizes the potential of the young child and nurtures this potential with special teaching methods and classroom materials. Children learn through hands-on experience, discovery and purposeful activity.
Dr. Montessori believed that every child learns individually and should be encouraged to work at his or her own pace. The Montessori Method allows children to discover and learn from their own experiences and is based on principles including observation, order, construction and independence in the prepared environment.
In a Montessori classroom, teachers observe children as they work, quietly offer guidance and prepare them for their next activity when it's time to do so. The classroom is designed so that a child can access the Montessori materials easily, freely selecting and replacing them without the need of adult assistance.
Montessori is not a protected name, so the interpretation of Montessori philosophy and methodology may be used in many ways. This makes teacher training and school affiliations extremely important. We are committed to offering the highest quality Montessori education based on Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) training. We invite you to visit our school for observations. This is the best way to ensure it is the right fit for your family.

What is the best age to begin Montessori schooling?

Our Primary program begins at 30 months of age.

Should a child be toilet-trained before schooling begins?

We ask that children be able to use the toilet independently, with minimal assistance

Is this a year-round program?

We offer a 10-month program, beginning in September to June, with two weeks off at Christmas and in March. We offer a summer camp for current students in July.

Do you have a kindergarten program?

The Montessori Primary program is a three year program. Children enter at age three and continue to the end of their Master Year (age 5; kindergarten equivalent year). Master Year is the culmination of the learning done in the previous two years. The child develops and practices leadership skills and confidence. To achieve the maximum potential from our Montessori program, all three years must be completed.

Why do preschool children come 5 days a week?

Young children thrive in a secure, consistent environment with a steady routine and adjust very well to this schedule. They bond easily with their teachers and peers when they have several consecutive days in their new community which they help to create. The steady rhythm of coming to their school helps create a very positive attitude towards school and their learning here. It is their classroom and their environment in which they are valued and respected members. They can count on seeing their friends on a regular basis and can consistently build on their learning.

How hard is it to transition a child from Montessori to a traditional school?

The characteristics and skills that children develop in a Montessori community will stay with them for life and will carry them into new environments with strength of character and confidence.

Are Montessori children successful later in life?

Research studies show that Montessori children are well prepared for later life academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to scoring well on standardized tests, most Montessori children are ranked above average on such criteria as following directions, turning in work on time, listening attentively, using basic skills, showing responsibility, asking provocative questions, showing enthusiasm for learning, and adapting to new situations..

Is there space available?

We have limited availability every Fall and typically operate with a two year waiting list.  Please contact the school for more information. In general, the school prefers to admit children at age three.  Older students will only be considered on an individual basis, as space allows, with preference given to students with previous Montessori experience. The school also takes into consideration indications that the Montessori experience is a preferred method of instruction for the family and the student.
